Most people do not take very good care of their teeth. Those white pearls that you call teeth make up your beautiful smile. Make Regular Dental Visits

Many people skip dental visits for one reason or another. This would be a good starting place to get better oral care. The dentist can examine your teeth, gums, and mouth to ensure that you are starting from this point to have a healthy mouth. Any problems that are discovered can be taken care of before they become worse. The dentist can also clean your teeth and give you a fresh start. Once that is completed, be sure to make regular dental visits to keep any problems in check.

Get a Good Toothbrush and Use It Twice a Day

If you have had your toothbrush for some time and the bristles are getting frayed, it is time to get another one. Get one with either soft or medium bristles, and avoid one with hard bristles because it will wear away your gums. Although you may be tempted to go high-tech, remember that a high-tech toothbrush will not do a better job if you do not take time to brush. Dentists suggest two minutes each time.

Floss Daily

Flossing also needs to be a part of your daily routine of oral health care. Tooth brushing removes the bacteria that forms on your teeth (plaque) and any food that is near the gumline. It cannot, however, remove food particles, bacteria, and acid from between your teeth. This is why you need to floss. Without flossing, cavities can form between your teeth and it can also enable gum disease to get started. The best time to floss is at night before you go to bed.

Reduce Sugar

Sugar is one of the main causes of cavities. The bacteria that cause cavities produce acid every time they eat sugar. It is the acid that causes the cavities. It does not matter whether it is sugary foods or a sugary drink, consuming it will promote the formation of acid on your teeth.

Drop the Sodas

Many sodas have as much as nine teaspoons of sugar in a single can. Fruit juice has about the same amount of sugar. With each sip of soda, it enables the bacteria to produce acid on your teeth for the next 20 minutes. If you sip soda or sugar-laden coffee all day, the amount of acid is destructive to the enamel on your teeth – which does not grow back. In addition, each soda also has its own acid – which only adds to the damage – making cavities form even faster.

While a soda every now and then will not make much difference, it is a good practice if you rinse your mouth out with water shortly afterward. This will remove the sugar and acid from your teeth. You also want to drink it rather quickly rather than sip on it slowly over a long period of time.

Use Fluoride

Fluoride is a mineral that helps protect your teeth. It is added to the water in most places, but you can also find it in many kinds of toothpastes and mouthwashes. After you brush with it, be sure not to use a mouthwash within 15 minutes because this will wash away the fluoride – and then you lose the benefit.

Get Vitamin D

Vitamin D is essential in the building of strong teeth. Along with calcium, these two minerals are necessary to build strong teeth. It also helps to strengthen your jawbone – and all your other bones. If you do not get enough vitamin D, you are at a greater risk of losing teeth and developing fractures in your bones.

Quit Smoking

If you want your teeth to stay white, smoking must go. It will turn them yellow fast and also eat away your gums. Smoking weakens the immune system in your gums because it cuts down on the amount of oxygen in the veins in your gums and mouth. This also helps break down the bone and greatly raises your risk of cavities and gum disease.

Avoid Grinding Your Teeth

Most people who grind their teeth while they sleep are not aware of it unless someone else tells them about it. The dentist can tell whether you do or not. Grinding your teeth, clenching your teeth, chewing on hard objects such as ice, and other harmful habits can easily lead to chipped or cracked teeth. It can also lead to problems with jaw pain (TMJ). Besides damaging your teeth, grinding your teeth may also mean that you have sleep apnea – a potentially fatal problem.
